With just a small increase in temperatures, new butterflies are emerging on a regular basis. Today it was the turn of the Green Hairstreaks with 8 counted across the reserve. Quite a bit earlier than last year! There was a good supporting cast with Brimstones particularly common as well as Speckled Wood, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Orange Tips.
The Early Purple Orchids are starting to show some colour – but they are a bit of a way off full flower just yet. However, those on the Mendips are already putting on a good show.
Spring seems to be the time for a good selection of yellow flowers. Certainly the Primroses and Cowslips are showing well and, according to records, we should be able to find some False Oxlips around as well. In amongst all the yellow, a patch of pink flowered Primroses.
